100 Year Milestone
The South Dakota CPA Society began in 1917 with four CPAs in public accounting and has grown to over 900 members working in public accounting, business, industry, government and education. The Society celebrated its 100 year anniversary in 2017 reflecting on the past, present and future of the profession. To view our historical brochure from the event click here.
Promoting the Profession
This committee has been active in the community serving on the following projects:
University Showcases hosted by the Society is an opportunity for college students to explore amazing companies and finance careers available in South Dakota by visiting with local CPAs. Students are also given information about scholarship opportunities; click here for more scholarship information.
Academy of Finance is an advanced high school program that allows students to learn how to record business transactions by using online, automated software and simulations. The program teaches students how to record business transactions, prepare financial statements, and learn business foundations for professional or personal use. Society members meet annually with three different classrooms at the CTE Academy of Finance to talk with the high school accounting students about the profession, their experiences, and give expert advice for their future careers!
Tax Prep Assistance at McCrossan Boys Ranch. The Society and its volunteer members perform annual community outreach and assist the residents at McCrossan Boys Ranch with filing their income taxes. For many of the boys, they had worked their first jobs in the past year and are unfamiliar with the process of filing taxes. Society members walked them through the process, answered all their questions, and gave them the necessary tools to prepare their own tax returns in the future.
Past Society Projects:
(1990-2020) ASK A CPA, was an annual call-in program sponsored by the Society that gave the public an opportunity to ask a certified public accountant (CPA) about business and personal tax matters, planning for year end, general business and accounting issues, referrals and other financial concerns.
(2013-2019) Movies Under The Stars was a Society sponsored event along with local firms Ketel Thorstenson LLP, Casey Peterson, LTD, DeSmet & Biggs LLP, and Donna Denker & Associates. The event took place in the Rapid City community for a night of games, giveaways, and a night of entertainment.
